So many listeners asked for, even demanded, that we extend the number of hours dedicated to the old radio shows, that we’ve done just that! Brian Peroff selects, and then describes some of the greatest shows from the golden age of radio — the 1930s and 1940s — like The Shadow and Fibber McGee & Molly. A half-hour of drama, mystery or suspense is followed by a half-hour of comedy — enjoy!

Hi Brian, Awhile ago you play the Lone Ranger on Theatre of the Mind. Could you tell me who played him on the radio and also who played Tonto.I know that two or three of them played on tv. Your programs are always great and especially Friday Nights. Keep up the good work. HWD
I love Theatre of the mind.. I am only 25 so listening to this radio show transports me to a different place and time. I love the Jack Benny Show, I listen to your show before I go to bed, it is very dreamy and heavenly. I feel like a time traveller. It does something unique to my mind. I feel like I must have lived in the 1930s or 40s… Thanks, Ben M. Egan
I HAVE JUST RECENTLY BEGUN LISTNING TO THEATRE OF THE MIND, I AM A FAN. BEING 62 YEARS OLD, I CAN REMEMBER RUNNING INTO THE HOUSE ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON TO CURL UP TO OUR HUGE CABINET RADIO TO LISTEN TO “THE LONE RANGER”. IF I MIGHT MAKE A SUGGESTION, BASIL RATHBONE AND NIGEL BRUCE PLAYED SHERLOCK HOLMES AND DR. WATSON ON 1/2 HOUR RADIO PROGRAMS IN THE ‘40′S. I THINK YOUR AUDIENCE WOULD LIKE THEM. I HAVE 50 OR 60 OF THE GEMS ON MP3. THANKS AGAIN FOR THIS EXCELLENT RADIO HOUR…PETE V.
I just love the “Theater of the Mind” program. I make sure I’m all settled in to bed right when it comes on. It’s like my bedtime story before I go to sleep. It makes you forget the pressures of the day and I just relax and fall asleep. I’m not old enough to have heard them when they originally came out( I’m 58),but I can see why they were so popular way back when. I’m from the suburbs of Chicago, so the broadcast fades in and out sometimes, but that makes it even more special when it comes in so clear from so far away in Canada! The mystery and detective series are great, and the comedy of “Fibber Mcgee and Molly” seems like it could have been written in the present time they are so good. I hope your program stays on for a long, long time. Thanks again, Wayne
Brian love the old radio shows I have 5 old tube type radios from 1938 to 1947 4 table models and 1 floor model and there’s nothing better then to listen to one of the old radio shows on one of these old radios and thank that someone long ago was listing to this same radio years ago and may have been listing to the same show and most likely was getting to here it live I have a 16 yr old daughter and likes listing to them on the 1939 Truetone.

Brian, AM740, absolutley love Theatre of the Mind. I listen mostly on my ride home from work way over here in Vermont. Reception at night during the show in Winter is excellent. When not driving, I listen online, or on my shortwave radio. Reminds me of the days before my time, when radio was in it,s “golden age”. Please keep it going. I also enjoy the Big Band music, nothing like it on AM radio.THANKS AGAIN!!
Greg in Vermont!
PS Running it on Friday night also would be great!
Brian .today august 30 am 74′S happy gang played your top ten songs from 1954 . I was entering high school and started to go to the high school dances .many of the kids ended up going steady with the girls they asked for a dance.my friend at the dance accepted my offer to dance and they played ! JOHHNY ACE PLEDGING MY LOVE. Nearly fifty years have gone by since his propositally suicide WHITH a gun shot to the head after a performance in TEXAS..TODAY I WAS A LITTLE SAD THE SONG NEVER GOT PLAYED .COULD YOU PLEASE PLAY IT SOME FRIDAY NIGHT IT WOULD MEAN A LOT TO THE 1950,s gang from PETERBOROUGH COLLEGIATE AND VOCATIONAL SCHOOL and all of your listeners would probably like to hear the JOHNNY ACE STORY? Thank you Tom kelly
Enjoying the radio shows. Hamilton listener.
Brian; I’m a long-time listener from down here in New Jersey.Love the show-just wish they gave you more time!I liked the recent Sherlock Holmes series, and also the one about the sailboat cruisinng the south seas,i think it was called “The Adventures Of The Dragon Queen” or some such. It was unusual. I’d like to recommend the “Fort Laramie” radio series that Raymond Burr did back in the 50’s-it’s very good.
Really enjoy theatre of the mind, would enjoy it more if the format was reversed and the comedy was first followed by the mystery. I would be like going to bet with a bedtime story, the comedy winds me up just before bed, were as the mystery settles me down, I am wondering if the other listeners feel the same way.
Thank you
Brian, very pleased with the upcoming line up on Theatre of the Mind! You can’t beat Abbott & Costello for great comedy. Thank You for continuing with your excellent radio entertainment.
What will it take to get you to extend the hours dedicated to the old classics? We would definitely love to hear more.
Joe & Sheryl Veroni
wondering if you could play “The Private Lives of Ethel and Albert”. Maybe you have; Although I try to listen to Theatre of the Mind as often as I can, I don’t get to listen to it as often as I would like to. It’s my favourite type of radio to listen to. I enjoy listening to it in bed while doing cross-word puzzles. I wish you could play it from 10 p.m. – 4 a.m.
I love this show espically thats its on at the time it is I love bolth types of shows featured on your program.
I also restore antique vintage tube radios Its like a time machine the tube radio playing the types of shows from that era its Truly

I just loved the Christmas shows, especially the Jack Benny Christmas shopping shows. Mel Blanc was hilarious. I’ve been a regular listener for a couple of years and can’t tell you how much I enjoy both the dramas and comedies. Thanks Brian, for keeping this great era of radio alive and well.
Really enjoy Theatre of the MInd, especially the comedy programs.
Any chance of airing some Burns and Allen?
Many thanks!
i live in michigans upper peninsula and listen on wed and thur at home and on mon and tue i listen on the computer at work. love the old shows. ever think of putting on some bob elliot and ray goulding? love that dry humor.
If the wind is right the stars are alligned just so and the airwave gods are kind I listen to you here in Brunswick, Ohio. I am 52 Y.O. but love old time radio!!! Thanks!! Bob
I know 1050CHUM had old time radio shows too. Sadly, they’re no longer on air, but I’m so happy to have found AM740. I’m such a fan. This is my favourite segment.
Just found your station and I have to say that I’m impressed. I especially enjoy the old time radio shows. Hoping to hear some Sherlock Holmes and Charlie Chan too. Please keep the old shows comming.
Bob, in central, NY.
This has been my night time listening for over two months now. It’s great that you have mysteries and thrillers, etc. followed by comedy. I wish it was on an hour earlier as I used to go to bed by 10 or 10:30 but I’m getting used to it. This is from my Dad’s era; it must have been great gathering around the radio in the evening. A tragic loss for these generations.
Let’s keep this on.
I’m a nubie CFZM listener here in Michigan….I particularly enjoy the dramas from The Golden Age of Radio….how about “I was a Communist for the FBI” or “The Lone Ranger” or “The Green Hornet” or “The FBI in Peace and War” or “Boston Blackie” etc etc ….keep up the good work :-)
Have been listening here in Vermont to old time radio each evening at 10 for quite some time. Have noticed recently that the shows being aired are repeats. I have heard them on 740 before. Is it time to get new packages of shows from that great era?? Await your reply. Keep up the good work.
Theatre of the Mind is is a great program but unfortunately too late for many Zoomer listeners. Hope you are planning to put these shows on podcasts on your website for easier access to this wonderful program.
I enjoyed the Sgt. Preston shows, all in all your doing a great job. Anne.
Brian, I am an avid listener and would like to hear “Pat Novak, for hire” starring Jack Webb. If at all possible. Thank You.
Thoroughly enjoy Theatre of the mind. Make a 75 year old VERY nostalgic. Listen whenever the atmosphere allows you thru which is about once every three days….But I try every night.
Bill
I would like to add to the support of the show. I think it is really interesting and fun to hear these repeats of the past. Keep up the good work.
Hi Brian:
I adore your “Theatre of the Mind”. I’m 71 years old, and remember most of the shows from the first time around. what a wonderful trip into the past. Thanks so much.

This is such an awsome station! My wife and I are in our twentys and are into the old radio programs. We live in Waukegan, Illinois, (Jack Benny’s home town) And again like a previous replyer We have old time tube radios wich we listen to your old time radio shows with. My wife and I have started to play cards and listen to the old time radio broadcast. Thanks to your station and your programing, my wife and I are haveing a great time together and and having more couple time. Thanks ZOOMER RADIO!
Brian, we love listening to your program – wish you were on more frequently and for longer periods of time!
Would like to hear more of Lucy, Abbott & Costello, The Marx Brothers, Red Skelton and Jack Benny. Can’t beat the great Detective stories either!
Thanks for enjoying evening listening!
Joe & Sheryl
How well I recall listening to the radio shows….much better than TV, as the listener made his/her own mental images. While in Toronto for Grade 9, Sundays was reserved for radio shows which began at about 3:00 PM. The newspaper had all the listings, and I recall jumping back and forth between two USA stations and the CBC. The last program came in at about 10:30. I thrived on I was a communist for the FBI; Suspence; tales from the crypt; Boston Blackie; Dragnet; the Shadow; cowboy shows and the comedies. It was great. TV with its laugh-track just doesn’t compare. Cheers, Graham Ducker
I have to say that “Theater of the Mind” is my favourite program on the radio. It is interesting to hear programs from the previous generations (I’m between 30 and 35).
I listen to your program while I work on my knitting etc. I enjoy not having to watch a television screen to be entertained. Listening to your program leaves my eyes free to watch what I’m working on so I get more done. (I wonder if sitting and listening to radio programs is the secret to how people from before the 60s used to get so much needle point/mending/sewing etc done.)
Thank-you for presenting the old radio shows to a new generation of future Zoomers.
Joey of St. Catharines, ON
I listen nearly every night. The old radio programs are far better than the junk they pass off on T.V.. They sure bring back the memories of sitting around the old table model Philco, when a person had to use their imagination.
R.M. New Holland, Pennsylvania
Brian, I would like to hear more of JACK BENNY and EVE ARDEN
this show is really awesome, George and I listen mostly every nite.
we like I LOVE LUCY too. keep up the good work.
I know u are musical director, don,t u choose VAYA CON DIOS and IN THE MOOD anymore? especially on SENTIMENTAL JOURNAL?
this show is so relaxing. and Frank Proctor is so funny with jokes etc.
A.fr.Miss
I love listening to the old time stories!! We go to bed and listen but I can’t say that we ever hear the endings!! I wish you had them on every night of the week….thanks.
I’ve been listening to your programs from day one, and I love the radio shows that you guys put on every night. Good Job.
Bill from Ashville, New York
I listen to Theater of the Mind quite often on the internet. I live in west central Illinois. I just love your show. I am not old enough to actually remember these programs, but I really enjoy most of them you play and it is my regular routine to listen at 9;00 Mon.-Thurs. The comments made about the shows are interesting, too.
I think your shows are great, Brian. I too am an antique tube radio restorer and love listening to your episodes. I get your signal crystal clear 98% of the time with very little fading on a 1938 Zenith console radio way down here in Sugar Grove, West Virginia. Your broadcast quality is excellant and I don’t notice any annoying “hiss” from HD on that frequency. I am betting that your station does not use that unecessary technology.
Keep up the excellant work.
Love the program.Keep up the good work.A listerner from the Windy City.
My, favorite show is Pat Novak for Hire. That and Amos & Andy would be a great week. Horseweed, from South of the.
I really enjoyed the Chicago Fraud Matter and the Earl Chadwick Matter.
Brian Peroff has a prodigious talent for choosing a complementary mix of drama and comedy; this show is the highlight of my weekday listening evenings–and I listen to radio every night rather than watch TV.
Thanks for programming for an appreciative audience.
i love you shows however we have lots of ststic on some evenings. keep up the good work.
irvy from north coast ohio usa
OH, how I enjoy “Theatre of the Mind” and the old radio programs. As a boy during the 40s and 50s I and my Dad would listen to The Shadow, Boston Blacky, Hop a Long Casidy, Sgt. Preston of the Yukon and others. I can, at times, recieve your broadcast on my AM radio, but when reception is poor, I warm up the computer to listen. Do keep on with the old programs and I’ll be listening with pleasure. John T. Henniker, New Hampshire, U.S.A.
I thoroughly enjoy the mix of old shows and wish there were more hours devoted to them each week. I also wish that the listings were kept current; they are often from the previous week.
Thanks,
Ray H.
Not to live in the past but to relive memories that is Zoomer. The rebroadcast of the radio plays and the comedy shows is so grerat. Then the music on Friday and Saturday nights brings back the teen age years sweet memories. Thank you
Brought up on radio in the 1930s with the Lone Ranger, Jack Armstrong & Capt Midnight, I still enjoy the radio detectives most, Sam Spade, Phillip Marlow, Nero Wolfe, & Sherlock Holmes. I enjoy you as one of the great announcers along with Chuck Schaden, Stan Freeburg & Greg Bell. Keep up the good work. ATS Born 1932.
I really enjoy the the old radio shows….but my 85 yr old mother enjoys them even more but she really likes certain shows so it was nice when you had a shedule it seems that is gone ..she stays up for some of the commdies ..I would really like it if you provide one ..can you
than you
I pick up the OTR segment (when conditions are right!) in Amsterdam, NY! I’ve grown to look forward to it when it is on.
