The influential Paris-based Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) says Canadian governments desperately need to clamp down on their health spending, and they should do so by making patients carry some of the costs and by fostering more competition. Expanding deficits will explode unless provinces and Ottawa deal with the rising health care costs associated with a quickly aging population.
Dale spoke with Peter Jarrett, OECD’s senior economist, on streamlining health care spending.

The film has won a long list of awards and recognitions, including last year in British Columbia at the Okanagan International Film Festival. It was also short-listed earlier this year in the Oscar documentary category.
The Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation will be organizing a screening of this film on Sunday, September 26th at the University of Toronto’s Isabel Bader Theatre.

Creating a national pharmacare program could slash more than $10.7-billion off Canada’s $25-billion-a-year drug bill, according to a new study that dismisses out-of-hand the notion that a public drug plan is unaffordable.
“Canadians cannot afford not to have universal pharmacare,” said our guest Marc-André Gagnon, an assistant professor in the School of Public Policy at Carleton University in Ottawa, in the Globe & Mail.
The report argues that Canada’s jumbled assortment of public and private plans and wildly varying drug policies across jurisdictions is inefficient, costly and inequitable.
