Join us on Saturday, April 17th from noon to 3pm, as we exclusively feature the new double CD of the legendary Amchitka Concert with host Gene Stevens, celebrating Earth Day’s upcoming 40th anniversary.
Produced by Greenpeace and launched in November 2009, this two-disc CD takes you back 40 years to October 16th 1970, when 10,000 people gathered in the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, Canada, to hear Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Phil Ochs. Their concert supported the very first Greenpeace action –the legendary voyage to Amchitka in the Aleutian Islands to protest nuclear bomb testing.
This brilliantly re-mastered monaural recording of the live concert captures the nuances of the times and rare performances by these fabled musicians. This broadcast will also feature three exclusive interviews – the CD’s producer John Timmins, the daughter of the late founder of Greenpeace (Irving) Barbara Stowe, who was at the concert, and the current Sr. Office Exec.Director of Greenpeace, Bruce Cox.
“What was a great product has become a critically acclaimed great product,” says John Timmins, CD producer and Foundations officer, Greenpeace Canada. “Everyone who has put their hands on it and listened to it loves it. This is a Greenpeace fundraiser that appeals to music lovers, history buffs and Greenpeace supporters alike.”
The Amchitka CD is available exclusively at www.amchitka-concert.com through Greenpeace for $21 plus shipping and taxes, where applicable. Electronic downloads of single tracks and the full CD is available for purchase on the site. You can visit a concert photo gallery and read about the concert and the famous voyage that created Greenpeace and changed the course of environmental and peace activism forever.
All proceeds go directly to Greenpeace.
This CD has never been broadcasted before, so tune in on April 17th from noon to 3pm as we approach the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, to hear the new double CD of the Amchitka 1970 concert for Greenpeace.

It was wonderful tuning in this afternoon and listening to the Amchitka concert. I knew Phil Ochs and produced the first Phil Ochs Music Tribute Concert here in Toronto. I’m still in touch with his sister. Congratulations, Gene, on the great interview with Barbara Stowe. Once upon a time there was real passion and real movement and a vision that necessitated a call to “Arms” (as in hugging). Not thhat there isn’t today, but it’s just that “the times have been a-changing”. I’m so appreciative of being able to go back to that time if only for a few hours. Joni was so “fresh”….I just can’t thank you for allowing me to hear Phil’s spirit again and his voice. I was able to recall not just his sister, Sonny, but his daughter, his nephews (one of them a firefighter at 9/11), his brother, his aunt, the home where he lived in Rockaway, his visit to my home here. Thank you. Sincerely, Honey Novick
