Advocating for protestors
I talked on December 3 with Peter Rosenthal, legal council for the Council of Canadians and advocates for Site 41 protesters who faced mischief and other charges for their heroic opposition to the landfill which threatened the world’s purest water source. Just after this interview, which you can listen to here, we learned that charges were stayed in a Midland courtroom against the Site 41 protesters who were charged with mischief.
This may not be the end of it, since they were released with a condition that some could have their charges reinstated within one year if they take part in similar activities.
This could depend on whether Site 41 is resurrected in some form; don’t forget the Certificate of Approval hasn’t been withdrawn yet. The best news is that charges were dropped against Ina and Keith Wood, the elderly Tiny Township couple that were the first to be charged earlier this summer. Ina, 76, has had a stroke and is in hospital. Three of the Site 41 heroes, from Beausoleil First Nation, were also charged with intimidation.

Hi Dale & Mary,
Thanks also from the Morgan family regarding Site 41. It is wonderful that the Crown has at least attempted to make things reasonably right. You can be sure that we will continue to lobby the Crown to drop ALL charges ASAP. To have a cloud hanging over sixteen of those arrested does not sit well with us. Justice is there to serve a purpose but is not there to intimidate those doing the right thing. This goes for the OPP and other police forces as well and hopefully they will not continue the practice of acting like para-military. This may not be the case however, because there was a helicopter circling Queen’s Park on Thursday, just like the helicopter at Site 41 this summer. Will this be the norm for future HST protests and blockades? And what about Shakespeare? Don & Mary Jane Morgan
P.S. Lots of food for thought, eh!
