The New AM 740 sponsors the Creativ Festival - where ideas, inspiration and creativity flourish!

Whether crafting for relaxation, gift giving, personalizing your home or making a unique fashion statement — it’s a trend that’s growing with many experiencing and enjoying the self-satisfaction of creating! The 23rd annual Creativ Festival, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, South Building, is THE place to be October 22 to 24, 2010 to get in-the-know and stay on top of what’s hot, what’s new and what’s next in the world of sewing, knitting, beading, quilting, machine embroidery, needlework, paper arts and crafting.

With this year’s line up of events, classes and activities just released a week ago, all signs are pointing to a record breaking attendance with over 30,000 expected. For the first time ever, the first class sold out in just 3 hours and already more VIP Platinum and Gold delegates have registered than in total last year.

For 3 days only, Friday to Sunday, the exhibit hall, infused with inspiration, is offering stunning displays, runway shows, demos, make ‘n takes, how-tos, meet & greets and more. Here you will find to-die-for fabrics, fibres, papers, beads, patterns, kits and must have notions, tools and equipment. In our Canadian Arctic Pavilion, discover the luxury of Qiviuk, the inner down of exceptional quality from the Muskox, an animal that survived the last ice age. Relax and sample the many fibres of Coats & Clark Canada, Westminster Fibers and Kertzer at their yarn tasting. And, watch fashion happen right before your eyes as student design teams race the clock to complete a winning design in their show floor studios for our Project Creativ Catwalk challenge.

There’s always something new to learn. Whether beginner or expert you can choose from more than 200 hands-on classes that will challenge you to explore and work with new mediums while indulging in the process of personal design and style. Get up-close-and-personal direction from industry experts and some of the world’s most recognized designers and artists. Joining us for the first time from Australia are embroidery design guru, Simon Haskins and doll artist, Kate Heaslip who will help you recreate yourself in a 6″ figurine. Katrina Witten from England brings the British countryside to life in her free-style embroidery mini landscapes and florals. From California and in Canada for the first time are both Lennie Honcoop, who pioneered the use of Hot Ribbon to embellish appliqué and Stephanie Kleinman, creator of the long running HGTV series Simply Quilts, now sharing her new Fabric Studio™ software. Did you know you can create your own fabric designs and either print them out on small fabric swatches right on your printer or send away for the yardage you want?

Enjoy techniques rich classes focusing on cards or scrapbook layouts from both Cathie Allan and Sarah Hodgkinson. Paula Lishman shares her “knit-woven” and “crochet-woven” techniques for eye-popping garments using her stunning and unique fur yarns. If felting is your area of interest, there’s none better from whom to get the scoop, than Gio and Norm Gaudet, whose incredible line of felted garments launched LG Fashion week in Toronto this year. Make a trendy pillow sham with Terry Edward Briceland, “that sewing guy” on Rooms that Rock and Divine Design or create reversible garments with Kathryn Brenne, who has over 70 articles published in magazines like Vogue Patterns, Threads and Sew Stylish. This is just a sampling of the hands-on workshops starting on Wednesday, October 20th before the show floor opens.

Many of the designers will also be on hand for you to meet inside the exhibit hall or be inspired by exhibitions of their work. Whether visiting the Festival exhibit hall for one day or treating yourself to a 5-day VIP experience you’ll find there’s something for everyone, even if you’ve never crafted before. You can save if you buy tickets or register for classes in advance. For more info call 1.800.291.2030 or log on to www.creativfestival.ca

Canadian Stage - Saint Carmen of the Main

Saint Carmen of the Main
Written by Michel Tremblay
Translated by Linda Gaboriau
Directed by Peter Hinton
In co-production with The National Arts Centre
Feb.7- Mar. 5 2011

A country singer and darling of Montreal’s seedy red-light district, Carmen triumphantly returns to her old haunts after a visit to Nashville to hone her craft. Doing away with bleedin’ hearts and lonesome nights, Carmen now sings about the people in her audience: hustlers and whores who for the first time become the heroes of these songs, not just the witless consumers. This mythic tale of a nightclub singer who dares make art from the lives of those on the fringes of society is a seminal play from Canada’s best-known playwright.
