It’s the final full week of August, the EX is underway, and it just feels like things are winding down. This morning I heard The Happy Gang’s special morning “feel-good oldie’ – Bobby Rydell’s “Wildwood Days” – what a great song, with its optimistic, springtime anticipation of the summer delights lying ahead. Now, in late August, many of those ‘delights’ have either been realized or accepted as unlikely to happen. I’m not melancholy – just a bit wistful, perhaps.
The days are slowly shortening, the nights getting cooler; with each year’s EX, you know Labour Day and the return to routine, is just ahead. Fittingly, I just saw the final performance of ‘The Jersey Boys’ – Sunday night. My thanks to Aubrey Dan, and my congrats as well for treating the city to a fabulous show for 2 years !
Last Friday (20th) we also had the final Trillium cruise with Toronto historian Mike Filey’s on-board commentary, as we paddle-wheeled across the harbour and listened to Mike’s stories; I was happy to MC the occasion and meet lots of very nice AM 740 listeners.
But there are always things to look forward to; new things, new shows, new experiences as the cycle continues – right ? For me, as one twin daughter comes home after a year on her own, the other twin is about to leave for a shot at New York City; during the month overlap, we’ll all be enjoying TIFF, Toronto International Film Festival (we are movie geeks). One of my hopes is to watch the entire Godfather saga with them both – they were so young when they first watched the epic with a dad eager to share the best movies with his girls…perhaps before they were quite ready ?
I’m also planning a fall driving trip to Boston, Cape Cod, NYC and Washington with my lady-friend (Trudy). Fall is such a beautiful season – except for November, which makes me shudder.
My fitness training is going well – dropped about 9 pounds by eating better and exercising with a trainer – feel stronger, and that’s good. I can pass up most sweet treats now ! (although I DID fall for the strawberry waffle at the EX !)
So what’s coming up on my weekend shows ? ‘Vintage Favourites’ this Sunday (29th) will spotlight songs from World War Two, as we mark the 65th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific. So, I’ll have lots of great songs by Vera Lynn, Bing Crosby, Dinah Shore, and others. I’m still working on a big Labour Day weekend feature, but I can tell you, the following Sunday – September 12th – will feature 2 hours of the best ROCK-A-BILLY music ever. My co-host will be David Farris, well-known to the downtown club scene as the rockabilly DJ. He and I are selecting a fabulous line-up of classic songs to tell the story of rockabilly music. Don’t miss this one.
So, my musing is done for this late August afternoon – thanks for reading – and stay tuned for great listening ! Cheers !
