The Vancouver Olympics are celebrating its 1 year anniversary…all the sports channels are showing highlights from THIS day at the games…and what happened one year ago…well…when the Sidney Crosby gold medal winning game comes up, we’ll all have warm memories of where you were when THAT game took place…and do you know what number stands out from that game ?…what time was on the clock when Crosby scored in OT..?
7:40…..7:40….talk about numbers..
not 640…not 1050….not 107…but 740 ! How’s THAT for a number.

Well, as you saw on a recent ZOOMER magazine cover – He’s ONE ! Wayne Gretzky is 50 years old. Happy birthday pal. You and I go a way back to days I hosted the annual Wayne Gretzky softball tournement in the late 80’s. It was terrific sitting at the same table as Mike Myers, Terri Garr, Bubba Smith and our girlfreind/wives. Now THAT’S eclectic bunch, huh ? Oh my ! We would become good freinds over the years, even spending time with him and Janet in LA.
My fave Wayne story happened in his last year, and his final game at Maple Leaf Gardens. I was on a 1st date with a young lady, strolling pre-game around the Leaf-Ranger benches, and I get a shout out , “Hey Johnny”. It was Wayne, who took off his glove gave me a little hug and asked who the new ‘chick’ was. We chatted before he resumed his pre-game warm-up in that GORGEOUS red, white and blue Ranger unie. Remember, this was a 1st date ! Let’s say the rest of the night went, ah, well. Lol !
How cool was that. Happy 50th my brutha’.

Hey as you might know from our chats on the air, Bill Gable and I are taking the Becel pro active challange and we are both hoping to reduce our cholestorol readings in 21 days…we are pretty well right in the middle of the challenge….we’ve been using becel pro active calorie reduced margerine with plant sterols instead of our usual margerine and are hoping to see some considerable improvement in our cholestroll numbers …actually looking forward to getting the numbers back from the doctors who told me get my cholestorol down…

Hey my fellow radiophiles, and you KNOW who you are ..here’s a bit I did recently on AM740 that I got alot of feedback on. It begs repeating.
You Know You’ve Been in Radio Too Long If… and since I started radio in my mid-teens in 1977 ..well..
enjoy !
You excitedly turn the radio up at the sound of “dead air” on the competitor’s
station.

Sales guys wore Old Spice to cover the smell of liquor.

You were playing Elvis’ number-one hits when he was alive.

Engineers could actually fix things without sending them back to the
manufacturer.

You worked for only ONE station, and you could name the guy who owned it.

You remember when normal people listened to AM radio, and only “hippies”
listened to FM.

Radio stations used to have enough on-air talent to field a softball team every
summer.

You used to smoke in a radio station and nobody cared.

You know the difference between good reel-to-reel tape and cheap reel-to-reel
tape.

You have a white wax pencil, a razor blade, and a spool of 3M splicing tape
in your desk drawer – - just in case.

You know people who actually listened to baseball games on the radio.

You spent most of the time on Friday nights giving out the high school
football scores. And when they weren’t phoned-in, you got really pissed off. I’ve DONE that …really !

You never thought twice about drinking from the same bottle with another DJ.

Somebody would say, “You have a face for radio”, and it was still funny.

Sixty percent of your wardrobe has a station logo on it.

The only interaction between you and someone else prior to bedtime
is, “Thank you. Please pull ahead to the second window.”

Your family thinks you’re successful, but you know better.

You played practical jokes on the air without fear of lawsuits.

You’ve been married at least 3 times, or, never married at all.

You answer your home phone with the station call letters.

You used to fight with the news guy over air-time. After all, what was
more important: your joke about your ex-wife, or that tornado warning?

You know at least 3 people in sales who take credit for you keeping your
job.

You have several old air-check cassettes in a cardboard box in your closet
that you wouldn’t dream of letting anyone hear anymore, but, you’ll never throw
them out or tape over them. Never!

You still have nightmares of a song running out and not being able to find the
control room door.

You run a phone contest and nobody called, so you made up a name and gave
the tickets to your cousin.

Huh ? All this is so true.

best

JFK Gallagher

Well, my fellow Habs fans – (Hey I’m allowed – Station owner Moses Znaimer is from Montreal too ! – lol ) What a nutty spring for the Canadiens, huh ? I was thinking a lot today about what the Habs have given us, their fans, this season. I know it’s something significant and something (hopefully) long-lasting, but also something hard to define. It’s not the redemption of an up-and-down season by a great playoff run, although that’s definitely something for which to be grateful. The best way I can put it is to say they’ve given us back a culture of respectability. It’s not the culture of winning in which the team was once steeped, but it’s something as important in its own way.
In the last five years, the Habs have been a playoff team in all but one. The conference title two years ago surprised everyone and made people start to think maybe they should take the Habs seriously again.
I’m sad the run is over. I really hoped they’d be able to pull it off and meet the Hawks in the finals. But under the sadness is a sense of deep satisfaction that the move toward respectability started by Bob Gainey has been greatly advanced by this playoff run. Respectability may be regarded as a small thing, but I believe it’s an essential state to achieve before a team becomes a winner. If a team is respectable, free agent players want to be part of it. If it’s respectable, its members can be proud of their effort even in defeat. Fans can smile and say, yes, that’s my team. It’s in the playoffs every year and the men wearing its sweater leave everything on the ice when it really matters.

With apologies to Diana Ross, I have an Olympic hangover that I don’t want to get over. Well, well, well, after a slow start Canada comes off at the end to top the podium 14 times. Allright, we didn’t OWN the podium (that was soooooo Un-Canadian anyway) we just rented it to the USA for the month (lol) Some Olympic thoughts – don’t be fooled – I’ve played net for 40 years and those 5-hole shots are tricky – Sidney Crosby ripped that one past Ryan Miller – it looked like an easy save, but 5-holes are deceiving ! Had the Americans won I would have singlehandidly tarred and feathered Ron Wilson and Brian Burke of the Leafs- I’m serial…ahh serious.
Also, how could Cheryl Bernard MISS those 2 easy shots in womens curling ? She made those in Junior high school ! OMG Did you see the look on the Swedish skip ?
Whhaa….I won ? whaaa ? Loved the girls hockey celebration BTW…AND Jon Montgmery’s pitcher of beer downtown. Classic ! And what’s this about a Buffalo radio station REFUSING to play Canadian artists as a result of our hockey win ? No kidding.. Cheektawaga…Tanawanda…Lackawanna…
Lack-a- wanna live there ! Oh, hurt me !

best

JFK
So many memories, now it’s counciling in this post Olympic stress ! lol. And what’s this…
