Mayor John Tory says he supports the decision as well as the decision to impose stiff fines on violators. Organizers of illegal gatherings could be fined a minimum of $10,000 while those attending the events face fines starting at $750.
“I hope what it’s more about is sending a message to people that we are in a situation where the numbers were getting much more serious and heading very much in the wrong direction to something worse with some modest restrictions on parties that people could have. As a matter of common sense they probably shouldn’t have been there anyway.” Tory told CP24 this morning.
The new rules apply to private and public events but not businesses like movie theatres, restaurants, gyms or weddings at banquet halls.
