We’ve covered many music genres in our year-long adventure like swing, soul, and surf; reggae, rockabilly, folk rock, hard rock and the roots of rock’n’roll too. But this Sunday (Sep.30th), it’s a show filled with classic songs of the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s that are part of that very special collection called ‘The Great American Songbook’.
These were songs composed mainly for the Broadway musical and the Hollywood film – by the giants of their time: Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, The Gershwins, Johnny Mercer, Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Oscar Hammerstein II, and so many others.  These classics have stood the test of time and are still being performed and recorded today – but I’ll get to the ‘modern’ versions of these timeless songs NEXT week – first let’s hear them in their classic versions by Sinatra, Crosby, Astaire, Fitzgerald and others THIS week.
Then in the second hour of the show, I’ll turn to the ‘Canadian Chapter’, with some delightful surprises, as well as over a dozen of the songbook’s interpretations by Canadians from Anne Murray and k.d.lang, to Jeff Healey, Michael Buble and Nikki Yanofsky.
It’s ‘The Great American Songbook – the Classics Edition‘ this Sunday/30th on ‘Vintage Favourites’ – cheers.
