HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICKEY MOUSE! A Look Back at 90 Years of Disney Magic...

If you’ve ever been a kid (!) or had a child – Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse has probably been a part of your life. Mickey debuted 90 years ago this Sunday, November 18th in 1928, in the cartoon short film ‘Steamboat Willie‘. I remember watching ‘The Mickey Mouse Club‘ on TV, and ‘The Wonderful World of Disney‘ on Sunday evenings while growing up, and of course, I took my kids to the Disney movies, and I have fond memories of watching Disney videos with them – over, and over, and over again. And, of course, we went to Disney World too. I think we were lucky to enjoy the second ‘golden age’ of Disney films during the 1990s with ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘Aladdin’, ‘The Lion King’, Pocahontas‘ and ‘Toy Story‘ – what wonderful films.
So I thought it’d be fun to spotlight classic songs from Disney films – 12 of them, including 7 Oscar winners, on this Sunday’s ‘Vintage Favourites’ – exactly 90 years after Mickey’s debut. You’ll hear iconic Disney songs from every decade from the 1930s through the new millennium – and I guarantee they’ll bring back a flood of good memories.
I’ll also have three intriguing birthday spotlights. I’ll remember a key figure in the early rock’n’roll era who we rarely think about today – Hank Ballard. He led The Midnighters in the 1950s, and gave us the naughty ‘Annie‘ songs, then wrote and recorded ‘The Twist‘ – only to see Chubby Checker take his song and make it the famous classic. And two good friends of the station have birthdays coming up next week – I’ll salute Keith Hampshire and Matt Dusk, and give you an early listen to Matt’s brand new release: ‘Let’s Hop on a Plane‘.
I hope you’ll join me for this Sunday’s ‘Vintage Favourites’ !
