‘Mama said there’d be days like this’, and ‘mama didn’t lie’. She made me a ‘coat of many colours’, she ‘loved me like a rock’. and she said ‘whatever will be, will be…’ What more could you ask for? A mother’s love is unconditional, and poets have sung her praises through the generations. I’ve gathered together over two dozen amazing songs about Mom. Many are classic favourites, but I’ll guarantee I’ve found some you’ve never heard before. I cast a wide net for artists from different genres and different eras for this special edition of ‘Vintage Favourites’.
We’ll begin, as we always do, with an hour of great music from ‘The Fabulous Fifties – and Beyond’, and then I’ll take a brief pause from Mother’s Day songs, to continue our year-long feature on ‘the greatest groups of our time – in alphabetical order’ – bringing us to Motown’s legendary quartet: The Four Tops. Then we’ll carry on with more songs about Mom and wrap things up with a salute to the late great folk-pop singer Jesse Winchester, who would’ve been turning 75 later this week.
Please join me for songs about Mom – some funny, some wise, many poignant and all quite wonderful. That’s this Sunday – Mother’s Day – from 2:00 to 4:30, on Zoomer Radio.
