One of the most influential Canadian recording artists is actually from Arkansas. But we loved Ronnie Hawkins from the first night he played The Grange in Hamilton and then moved to Toronto’s Concord, and on to Yonge Street’s Le Coq D’Or.  ‘The Hawk’ not only brought authentic rockabilly music north of the border, but he mentored and groomed an entire generation – or three – of Canadians who went on to amazing careers.  The Band, Robbie Lane & The Disciples, David Clayton-Thomas, Crowbar, David Foster, and others – all spent time working with Hawkins.  We embraced and adopted him, and he stayed.
Ronnie was born just two days after Elvis – January 10th, 1935 – so this Sunday marks his 86th birthday.  I’m playing 15 of his best songs – the hits and the rarities, including a live performance from his 60th birthday concert at Massey Hall, with Jerry Lee Lewis.
It’s most unusual, but there are another nine incredible musicians – famous stars of the past and present – who were also born on January 10th in various years. I’ll have an entire hour set aside to salute these others.  And ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘ will remember Elvis Presley’s first recording session for RCA and Diana Ross’ final show with The Supremes; the only non-Christmas song to go to #1 in two different years; and a song so controversial, the FBI was called to investigate.
I hope you’ll join me for the next ‘Vintage Favourites’ this Sunday (Jan.10th) between 1:00 and 4:30pm.
