ELVIS AT THE MOVIES

I’m kicking off the new year with the first ‘Vintage Favourites’ show of 2022 – a quartet of Elvis movies. Our sister station – VISION-TV – is featuring 4 Elvis films on four evenings leading up to the anniversary of The King’s birthday, January 8th. They’re showing ‘Kid Galahad’ January 3rd, ‘Frankie & Johnny’ Jan.4th, ‘Follow That Dream’ on Jan.6th and ‘Clambake’ on Jan.8th. And I’ll play a couple songs – rarely heard – from each of those movies – in our main feature on the next edition of ‘Vintage Favourites’ – this Sunday, January 2nd.

I’ll also remember the radio station’s launch 21 years ago on Elvis’ birthday – January 8th, 2001 – and play a few of the key artists we actively supported in our early days.  There’s more: a birthday salute to Ron Sexsmith – also born January 8th – and, in our first-hour feature: ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘, we’ll salute two others also born January 8th: David Bowie and Shirley Bassey.  Among other surprises, get ready for the 60th anniversary of The Beatles’ infamous failed audition at Decca Records, and ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ – ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’.  It was #1 60 years ago in a version by The Tokens – but I’ll also play you TWO earlier versions of the song – including the extremely rare first version by the African artist Solomon Linda.

It’s a great way to start a new year – with ‘Vintage Favourites’ – I hope you’ll join me this Sunday, January 2nd at 2pm.  Cheers, to a very happy 2022.
