TORONTO SONGS FOR TORONTO’S BIRTHDAY
This Sunday’s show (March 6) marks several interesting anniversaries, and makes for a very busy and fascinating show. The old Town of York was incorporated as The City of Toronto March 6th 1834, so we’re marking our city’s 188th birthday. This Sunday’s show also marks the 15th anniversary of ‘Vintage Favourites’, which debuted this week in 2007.
I’m combining the two anniversaries by saluting our great city with 15 wonderful songs about Toronto. Well-known ones by Murray McLauchlan, Bruce Cockburn and Gordon Lightfoot will be there, along with the Tommy Ambrose anthem ‘People City‘, the sports classics ‘OK Blue Jays‘ and ‘Clear the Track – Here Comes Shack‘, and songs about the TTC (celebrating its own Centennial this year). Plus, a fantasy song that became so popular a very real ‘Echo Beach’ was created.
It’s also International Women’s Day coming up, March 8th; included in my show is ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ ‘I Am Woman’. And the legendary ‘beat poet’ Jack Kerouac was born 100 years ago next week. I’ll play you one of Kerouac’s own readings, and then a song by Bob Dylan – his first charting hit – deeply influenced by Kerouac. ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘ will also remember Paul’s marriage to Linda, and three classic albums in the news: The Velvet Underground’s first album, Neil Young’s ‘Harvest’ and U2’s ‘Joshua Tree’.
That’s the kind of variety you can always count on – after 15 years of ‘our Sunday afternoon radio tradition‘ – ‘Vintage Favourites’ (2:00 – 4:30). Cheers!
