EARTH DAY 2022 EDITION

‘Earth Day’ comes around every year on April 22nd, since the first one in 1970.  If there’s one day that needs to be stretched year-round, it would be this one.  We’ve had over a half-century of growing evidence, undeniable science, and worsening real-life conditions – from heat-waves, blazing forest fires and scorching drought, to wild weather swings, powerful storms, rising sea levels, dying species and horrific pollution.   It’s overwhelming to take it all in – adding to our other existential threats: pandemic, war, inflation, housing costs, etc.

But we need to think about it, and take more meaningful action – even if it’s a small personal gesture – to protect our one and only planet.  Of course, the planet will always be here, spinning on its axis around the sun. It’s LIFE on our planet – life as we know it – that we must protect. In effect it’s our own lives that are in the balance, and our children’s, and so on. Most of our  threats are related to, and intertwined with, the environment’s degradation.  It’s complicated; there are no simple answers, and the solutions won’t be cheap.

So how does music fit in?  Artists can focus a message and appeal to both our intellect and our emotion in a song – get us thinking and feeling. This Easter Sunday, I have eleven special songs; some are well-known classics, others less-familiar, but just as powerful and convincing. Each will make its point and likely move you emotionally.  I hope you’ll join me.

I have several other features in this Sunday’s show. A half-hour salute to our dear friend, the late Bobby Curtola. And in our first-hour – ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘ – remembers four of the greatest guitarists in pop/rock music linked by coincidental birth and death, and ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ ‘Heartbreak Hotel‘. Elvis Presley’s first #1 hit on the pop charts, 66 years ago, had quite a back-story, which I look forward to telling you.  Happy Easter !
