THE LOST HITS OF THE LATE SIXTIES

I’m really enjoying this series – searching for ‘The Lost Hits’ – which I started a few weeks ago, with ‘The Lost Hits of the Fifties’, followed recently by ‘The Lost Hits of the Early Sixties’. I hope you’re having fun listening to it as well.  This recurring series returns this Sunday (May 1st) with 20 songs from 1965 through 1969.  Each is a song well worth hearing again; in fact, several are considered ‘classics’ – but at the time, each failed to crack ‘The Billboard Hot 100’s Top 20’.  Thus I call them ‘lost hits’.

This Sunday, you’ll hear great songs by soul legends Sam Cooke, Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes; songs by Elvis and The Beatles, and songs of ‘The Toronto Sound’, including a Robbie Lane & The Disciples song the station has never played before. And wait till you hear the last two songs – both were #1 hits in the UK, but barely heard in North America – rare treasures of the late Sixties.

During the show’s first hour – ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘ – I’ll run the gamut from a ‘west side story’ in New York to a Latino classic for ‘Cinco De Mayo Day’ by a Los Angeles band, and into outer space: ‘May the 4th be with you.’  Sadly, May the 4th is also the anniversary of the Kent State shootings, so ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ delves into the Neil Young classic ‘Ohio’.  Another show highlight is the song Bruce Springsteen sang at his audition for CBS Records – ‘Growin’ Up’ – 50 years ago this week.

It’ll be another great afternoon of listening – I hope you’ll join me this Sunday from 2:00 to 4:30 for ‘Vintage Favourites’.
