One of Hollywood’s greatest stars – Judy Garland – was born 100 years ago; June 10th, 1922. We’ve all grown up watching ‘The Wizard of Oz’ with her classic song ‘Over the Rainbow’; I’ll play two less-often heard versions of her signature song, including the film version and a stunning live version from later in her life. Of course there was much more to Judy’s story – triumphant and tragic – from ‘Dear Mr. Gable’ and ‘Get Happy’ to ‘The Man that Got Away’ … and a life that slipped away far too soon.
Judy Garland’s Centennial Celebration is the main feature. I’ll also salute the late great Rompin’ Ronnie Hawkins, with a half-hour of his best.
And ‘The Story Behind the Song’ takes us back to this week’s release in 1965, of the Rolling Stones’ ‘I Can’t Get No Satisfaction’ – it became their first #1 hit in North America. I hope you’ll tune in this Sunday at 2pm.
