BRIAN WILSON at 80!

One of pop music’s greatest rivalries was during the mid-60s explosion of creativity spurred by The Beatles and Beach Boys – as Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson took turns raising the bar from ‘Rubber Soul’ to ‘Pet Sounds’, ‘Revolver’ to ‘Good Vibrations’ and eventually ‘Sgt. Pepper’.  Paul McCartney recently turned 80 – we saluted him last Sunday – and now Brian Wilson has his own milestone 80th birthday coming up. So this Sunday’s ‘Vintage Favourites’ spotlights the Beach Boys’ leader – the erratic genius who took them from surf and hot rods to such studio wizardry that ‘Good Vibrations’ couldn’t actually be performed live on-stage the same way it was produced in the studio – for years.

Brian Wilson in the sunny spotlight, along with a birthday salute to Anne Murray and a first-hour look back at ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘ including the world’s first live international satellite television production. ‘Our World’ is best-remembered for The Beatles’ iconic ‘All You Need is Love’. Much-earlier technology also marked a significant milestone this week in1948 when Columbia Records released the very first long-playing 33rpm ‘album’. I’ll play you a song from that album.

And I’ll tell you ‘The Story Behind the Song’ ‘MacArthur Park’ – the first song to push the time-limit boundary of a hit record past the 7 minute mark.  I hope you’ll join me this Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 4:30.  Cheers (and a Happy Father’s Day to all the dads).
