LABOUR DAY WORK SONGS

It’s the long Labour Day holiday weekend coming up – marking the symbolic end to the summer and a return to work. It’s also an annual celebration, and a salute to the working man and woman. I’d like to join in with a dozen great songs about working.  From white collar, to blue collar, to no collar at all … from coal mines and tobacco fields to the office and restaurant … from country and pop, to rock’n’roll, disco and folk – with plenty of ‘the blues’ too.

This coming week also marks the anniversary of several major events which I’ll mark with appropriate songs from ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘. Elvis made his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. It was not his first time on TV – but the moment was historic because Sullivan had TV’s top show and 80% of the American TV audience was tuned in, making it the most-watched TV show of the 1950s. And Elvis hit a home-run, performing not only his career’s biggest hit single, but revealing for the first time his upcoming release of a ballad from his first film which he was shooting in Hollywood at the time.

This was also the week The Beatles had their first formal recording session – 60 years ago – cutting ‘Love Me Do’. It’s quite the story – especially how they were required to come back a week later to re-cut the same song – using a studio drummer.  I’ll tell you all about that in ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ – and I’ll play you BOTH versions of the song.

There’s more: Princess Diana died 25 years ago, and it was later that evening – after Elton performed at her funeral – that he recorded ‘Candle in the Wind ’97’. The song went on to become the all-time top-selling record in the post-1950 era. This week also marks the births of two country music legends: Jimmie Rodgers 125 years ago, and Patsy Cline 90 years ago. Both died tragically much too young – but left a huge legacy.  Let me add Freddie Mercury and Michael Buble for a fascinating hour – and a great show. I hope you’ll set aside a little time on your busy Labour Day weekend, to tune in to Vintage Favourites this Sunday at 2pm.
