BIGGEST HITS OF A HALF-CENTURY – THE FIFTIES

We began a five-part series featuring ‘The Biggest Hits of a Half-Century’ – between 1940 and 1989 – with The Forties last Sunday.  This week it’s The Fifties, with the top-ranking song each year from the post-war crooners into the tidal wave of rock’n’roll … from Patti Page and Johnnie Ray to Elvis and Bobby Darin.  You’ll hear this exciting decade unfold and embrace each new flavour of the emerging baby boom.

Next week also marks another birthday for Randy Bachman.  I’ll play eight important songs from his lengthy career including the two #1 charting Billboard Hot 100 hits he enjoyed – as the only Canadian to achieve that, with two different bands. And in the show’s first hour (2-3pm.) ‘This Week in Zoomer Music’ recalls Jackie Wilson and Meat Loaf and Bessie Smith as well.

Plus the 40th anniversary of the compact disc – do you know which was the first CD sold October 1st 1982?  And – from a much earlier era – I’ll tell you ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ ‘Near You’. That song by Francis Craig and vocalist Bob Lamm set a record that stood for seven decades when ‘Near You’ held the top spot for 17 weeks.  It was an incredible achievement by a song that’s barely remembered today.  I’ll try to correct that. I hope you’ll join me this Sunday for ‘Vintage Favourites’ from 2:00 to 4:30pm.
