GENE’S ROAD TRIP SONGS

It was our first trip across the border since before Covid – and we were excited – you could say we were in a ‘New York State of MInd’.  Our itinerary would take us south along the Hudson River to Saugerties, in search of The Band’s former home they called ‘Big Pink’. It’s where they wrote the music for their legendary debut album. Did we find it? Was it still painted pink?  That’s all part of my story in this unique ‘road trip’ edition of ‘Vintage Favourites’.

Further south we crossed into New Jersey looking for Tony Soprano’s house. Sure – ‘The Sopranos’ was TV fiction, but the exterior shots with Tony walking down his driveaway to get the morning paper were at a very real suburban home – did we find it?

We were in ‘Sinatra-land’ too – in and around Hoboken – the New Jersey town where he was born, and from where he would stand some nights to stare at the lights of New York City just across the Hudson River.  Our trip then took us further south to ‘the Jersey Shore’, to Atlantic City and onward to the fabled boardwalk town of Wildwood – with its own contributions to rock’n’roll history back in the 50s and 60s.  What did we find?

Then we pointed our rental car back north into ‘The Big Apple’ – for four wonderful ‘autumn-in-New York’ days exploring Manhattan, and nights in the legendary Chelsea Hotel with its thousands of secrets gathered since its grand opening in 1884. Check out a few photos here – but catch the songs and stories by tuning in this Sunday (Nov.20th).
Some other highlights of the program include: a big birthday salute to Holly Cole, and ‘This Week in Zoomer Music’ remembering Simon & Garfunkel when they were ‘Tom & Jerry’, the sad passing of Freddie Mercury and David Cassidy and ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ ‘As Time Goes By’.  And time HAS flown indeed since the premiere of ‘Casablanca’ 80 years ago this week.  I look forward to sharing Sunday afternoon with you.
