ELVIS, SAM PHILLIPS & SUN RECORDS

This week marks several significant anniversaries including the centennial of Sam Phillips’ birth – the founder of the legendary SUN Record label in Memphis. Sam’s most impressive discovery was, of course, Elvis Presley, born 88 years ago on January 8th, 1935.  Just two days later, and a few miles away, Ronnie Hawkins was born. And on January 8th, 2001, this radio station was ‘born’ as AM 740. We would later become Zoomer Radio. So, I’m looking forward to several music spotlights – on Sam Phillips, Elvis, ‘The Hawk’ and this station.

But, I’m most excited about launching a brand new feature in the first hour of ‘Vintage Favourites’ called ‘Our Sunday Best – A Century of #1 Hits‘. Every Sunday between 2-3pm., I’ll dig deep into the music archives to find the biggest songs from this month in years past – going right back to the 1920s, 30s and 40s, as well as the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80, and 90s, and sometimes, even into the new millennium. I’ve found pure gold for this week’s premiere from Al Jolson’s hit at the top of the charts 100 years ago, to Glenn Miller, Patti Page, Elvis, The Beatles, Elton John, and Madonna – among the all-time greatest artists, each with a #1 classic in this week. Plus: ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ ‘You’re So Vain’ by Carly Simon, #1 50 years ago.  It’s the debut of ‘Our Sunday Best – A Century of #1 Hits’ – this Sunday at 2pm.
