BURT BACHARACH MEMORIAM & JUNO’S TEN BEST

He was a giant on our musical landscape, with over five dozen of his songs becoming major hit records from the 1950s into the new millennium; from pop, country and rock, to soul, jazz and movie scores, with Grammys and Oscars as well.  Burt Bacharach died recently, and I’ll feature his all-time five biggest hits – as ranked by Billboard Magazine. I think you might be surprised by some of them.

Many of us have, in our minds, a sense of his classics like ‘What the World Needs Now’, ‘The Look of Love’, ‘This Guy’s in Love With You’ or any of Dionne Warwick’s 60s hits. And great as those songs were, they’re not among his five biggest charting Billboard hits – thus the surprise. And I’ll add a couple more treats for true Bacharach fans: a late-career Grammy win with Elvis Costello, and Burt playing (and singing) his own favourite song – live.

That’s one of two countdowns in this special edition of ‘Vintage Favourites’.  With the 2023 Juno Awards ceremony coming up on Monday night, it’ll be fascinating to hear the All-Time Top Ten Juno Award winning artists. The list crosses music genres from pop and rock to folk, R&B and even classical – who do you think are on the all-time top ten list?

This is my 16th anniversary edition of ‘Vintage Favourites’ – the show launched March 11th, 2007.  The first-hour feature: ‘Our Sunday Best – A Century of #1 Hits‘ takes us from the #1 song this week in 1930 and 1940 through 1950, 1960, 1965, 1970 and 1980, and reveals ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’.  It’ll be a great show, and I hope you’ll tune in this Sunday (March 12th) from 2:00 to 4:30pm.  Cheers.
