Toronto will be losing one of its best-known theaters so that three condo towers can be built.

David Mirvish has announced that the Princess of Wales Theatre on King Street West will be torn down in order to make way for his ambitious project that will see 26-hundred condo units located in three 80-story towers designed by world famous Toronto architect Frank Gehry.

The towers will each have a different form, façade and use of materials.

Other buildings in the area will also disappear, including a warehouse building that currently stands at King Street and Ed Mirvish Way, and a group of buildings on the block bordered by King, Pearl, Ed Mirvish Way and John Street.

The project will also contain museum space, that Mirvish says will  feature many of his own collection of paintings that have never been on public display.

Mirvish says he expects the project will be completed over a three to seven year period.
