It was a year ago Sunday (July 27th) that 18 year-old Sammy Yatim was killed by police gunfire in a Toronto streetcar.
Yatim was in an empty streetcar on Dundas Street at about midnight when a confrontation developed between him and a number of police officers.
Gunshots were heard, and a surveillance video was shown that caused a public outcry about police use-of-force tactics.
Police officer James Forcillo has been charged with second degree murder, and Yatim’s mother has filed a 7-million-dollar lawsuit that names Forcillo, Police Chief Bill Blair and the Toronto Police Services Board as defendants.
Yatim’s father released a statement on the weekend saying that no father should ever have to go through what he has.
Nabil Yatim says he still wonders why his son had to be shot so many times, and why a taser gun was used on him while he was dying.
