The ball dropping in New York City’s Times Square on New Year’s Eve is such a popular and iconic image that many other U.S. cities have adopted the idea.

Cities putting their own twist on ringing in the New Year include Atlanta which drops a peach, and Miami which lets an orange fall.

Las Cruces, New Mexico spices up their celebration by dropping a 19-foot, chrome chili pepper at midnight.

And revellers in Arizona can watch a cowboy hat, a pine cone and a playing card welcome the New Year.

Cities say having such an event that ties in with their heritage is a great way to bring people to their downtowns.
