Our flag is 50 years old.

The red maple leaf, recognized around the world as the flag of Canada, first flew over the Peace Tower in Ottawa on February 15th, 1965.

Commemorative events took place across the country Sunday as Canadians celebrated our flag`s 50th birthday.

In Ottawa, Governor General David Johnston passed on greetings from the Queen, and unveiled a commemorative coin and stamp.

He said the maple leaf flag is so embedded in our national life, that we Canadians couldn`t imagine our country without it.
