HAMILTON BATTLES CANADA POST ON COMMUNITY MAILBOXES

The City of Hamilton has picked a fight with Canada Post over the Crown Corporation’s plan to install community mailboxes on municipal land.

It all stems from the recent decision by Canada Post to discontinue home delivery service because of higher costs resulting from a decline in personal mail as Canadians shift to email and other forms of communicating.

As Canada Post began picking locations for the new community mailboxes across the country, Hamilton City Council amended a bylaw that now requires the Post Office to obtain a permit for their installations.

Canada Post is ignoring the bylaw, claiming it has the authority to install the mailboxes where it chooses on municipal property. It wants the Ontario Superior Court to declare the bylaw invalid.
