Crowds were thinner on Parliament Hill today for the annual Canada Day Celebrations because of rain in the Ottawa area.

The rain and low cloud-cover also forced the cancellation of the Canadian Forces fly-past.

Governor General David Johnston inspected an honour guard, and there was a loud 21-gun salute.

Prime Minister Harper said Canada Day is a day to celebrate the diversity of people who make the country great.
