ELECTIONS CANADA GEARS UP FOR MORE VOTERS THAN USUAL

There could be a larger than normal turnout for Monday’s federal election.

That’s the thinking of Elections Canada based on the number of voters in last weekend’s advance polls when about 3.6 million people cast their ballots over the four-day period. That was a 71 percent increase over the number of advance ballots cast in 2011.

Elections Canada says they can add additional staff to begin counting ballots from the advance polls, or it can start counting ballots before the polls close if there is no extra staff available.

The agency says it wants to have result totals in a timely manner.
