A “community consultation” was held in Peel Region Saturday to get input from citizens about “carding,” the process of street checks used by police.
The program has been heavily criticized for being driven for the most part by racial profiling.
Peel Regional Police, and other forces across the province, say the street checks help with investigations, and make for safer communities.
But Premier Kathleen Wynne’s Community Safety Minister Yasir Naqvi has called the police carding practice “disrespectful” and “illegitimate.”
Peel Region and its police service say input from residents at Saturday’s community consultation will help them make decisions about the future of street checks.
