There’s concern about the discovery of the first documented case of rabies in a raccoon in Ontario in almost a decade.

It was discovered as the result of a fight between an agressive raccoon and two bull mastiff dogs in the back of an animal control van in Hamilton.

Hamilton Animal Control says people observing any distemperament in wildlife should contact local animal services.

Over 20 years ago, the province instituted rabies control programs. This past summer it distributed 100-thousand baits containing rabies vaccine.

The owner of the dogs said she will likely have to have them euthanized because they were not up to date with their rabies shots.
