He rode his bicycle through the streets of New York City, and to many he was as much a part of the fabric of the Big Apple as its long list of well-known boulevards, buildings, shops, neon signs and glitterati.

Bill Cunningham, a fashion photographer for The New York Times passed away Saturday at the age of 87.

In 1978 his chance photo of reclusive actress Greta Garbo got the attention of The Times, and led to his storied career shooting the famous and the not-so-famous as they posed in studios or as they strutted and pranced along the sidewalks of Fifth Avenue.

He knew what style was and his fashion-page photos brought it into the homes of the paper’s readers.

Cunningham had been hospitalized recently after suffering a stroke.
