The Trudeau government urges calm in Turkey amid reports of a coup attempt. It has advised Canadians not to travel to the country. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement expressing concern about the uprising by members of Turkey’s military and urging restraint. He issued the following statement: “On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to express our concern about this evening’s events in Turkey. We call for restraint by all parties. Canada supports the preservation of Turkish democracy, and condemns any attempt to subvert Turkey’s democratic institutions by force of arms. The Government of Canada is being kept informed of developments in Turkey, and we are doing everything possible to ensure that the safety and security of Canadians in that country is maintained.”

Meantime, Turkish officials report that at least 161 people have died and more than 14-hundred are wounded after a failed military coup attempt. But people are still jittery with reports of citizens were lining up at A-T-Ms, and buying water, food, other essential items, fearing the worst. Turkish officials say they’re now regaining control of the country, and that more than 28-hundred people have reportedly been detained
