The Kurdish flag is going to remain on the uniforms of Canadian special forces troops in Iraq in addition to the Maple Leaf, even after a Middle East expert at the University of Waterloo said it sends a mixed message.
Bessma Momani says it’s akin to a foreign military force wearing a Quebec flag while participating in an exercise in Canada.
Canada’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Johnathan Vance, says the Kurdish flag shows solidarity with a region that’s facing real threats, but that it doesn’t imply support for an independent Iraqi Kurdistan.
Vance decided the Kurdish flag would remain on Canadian uniforms after the completion of a review on the matter. It was ordered when some experts said the flag might be seen by both Kurds and Iraqis as Canada supporting an Independent Kurdistan.
