The majority of Canadians agree that immigrants wanting to come to this country should be screened for “anti Canadian values.”

A new Star, Forum Research poll shows 67 perecnt in favour of such a vetting process, an idea that was put out there by MP Dr. Kellie Leitch, a candidate for the Conserrvative Party leadership.

Leitch suggests screening newcomers for intolerant attitudes toward such things as religion, other cultures and sexual orientation.

The poll shows 87 percent of Conservative supporters back the idea: 57 percent of Liberals, and 59 percent of New Democrats.

Only one-quarter of respondents didn’t agree with screening immigrants, while nine percent had no opinion.

Zoomers appear to support such screenings the most. 73 perent of those aged 45 to 64 say yes to it — 70 percent of men and 64 percent of women.

Leitch has been criticized for her plan by members of her own party, some of whom see it as a hinderance to broadening its support.
