Kyiv has been named as the location for next year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

Ukraine won the right to hold the event in 2017 when Ukrainian singer Jamal won this year’s contest back in May in Stockholm with her song “1944.”

On Friday the 2017 organizing committee named Kyiv as the winner, beating out the Black Sea city of Odessa.

There were suggetions that Ukraine might choose a location in Russian occupied Crimea as a political gesture.

In spite of Ukraine suffering a severe recession, the war-torn country’s culture minister says they would spend 45 million dollars to host Eurovision.

Eurovision is the longest-running annual international TV song competition, and is held among member countries of the European Broadcasting Union.
