Sugar is getting a bad reputation these days. But, it never used to be the big bad health threat. A new report out in the Journal of the American Medical Association sheds some light on why that may be. The report reveals that back in the 1960s, the sugar industry paid researchers at Harvard to downplay the link between sugar and heart disease, and put more blame on saturated fat. Decades later the rigged research is drawing new scrutiny, with the current discussion about how people are consuming too much added sugar. Scientists are still working to understand links between diet and heart disease, but there’s growing concern about sugar and carbohydrates, and less blame on fat. The sugar industry’s funding and role were not disclosed when the article was published by the New England Journal of Medicine. The journal did not begin requesting author disclosures until 1984.
