The mayor of one of the GTA’s fastest growing communities has reached a major milestone.

Milton mayor Gordon Krantz became Canada’s longest serving mayor on Thursday, surpassing the legendary former mayor of Mississauga, Hazel McCallion.

The 79 year-old Krantz became mayor of the Halton Region town in 1980, and is still going strong. He was elected to Milton Town Council in 1965, and has seen the town’s population grow from about 5,000 to over 130,000.

Hazel McCallion’s 36-year term as mayor of the City of Mississauga began in 1978 and concluded with her retirement in October, 2014 at the age of 93.

Mayor Krantz says he has a bobblehead doll of “Hurricane Hazel” in his office, and says she’s always looking over his shoulder.

He says he got into politics when, while complaining about leadership, he was challenged by someone to change things.
