The future of health funding in Canada is headed for a showdown between the provinces and the federal government. Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau meets with health ministers Monday and discussions could get heated. Morneau has called provincial demands for more federal health funding “out of the realm” of possibilities insisting the federal government won’t agree to keep annual increases in transfers above three percent nor will the government raise its share of spending to 25 percent of provincial health budgets. Ottawa plans to reduce transfer payments from six to three percent trimming over $1 billion a year in payments. The provinces argue that would leave big holes in their health care budgets.
