Mississauga’s mayor is hosting a women’s empowerment breakfast as part of International Women’s Day. Bonnie Crombie has invited over 80 grade 12 students to take part in the event with the theme “Be Bold”. The young women will take part in panel discussions and talk about ways they can impact Canada’s next 150 years. Crombie says her mentors include her mother and long-time Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion. Prime Minister Trudeau, who has long called himself a feminist and International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau made a joint announcement today with a focus on women’s health. The federal government plans to spend $650 million over three years for sexual and reproductive health. The government made the announcement on International Women’s Day. The plan will focus on sexuality education, improving reproductive health services and investing in family planning and contraceptives. Trudeau has promised to promote gender equality at home and abroad, but advocates for the rights of women and girls say he still has a lot of work to do. And in the United States, women are being asked to take the day off and not spend money in what’s being called “A Day Without a Woman,” in an effort to show their economic power and impact on American society. And scores of female child-care workers in Australia have walked off the job to protest what they deem inadequate pay rates.
