The association representing Toronto’s police officers is urging Toronto city hall to pull the funding for Canada’s largest Pride parade after organizers banned police floats. Police Union President Mike McCormack, reading from a letter written by LGBTQ officers, says the city shouldn’t give an annual grant to organizers of the Pride Parade. In the open letter, officers express that it’s unacceptable for the roughly 260-thousand-dollar grant to be given to an event that excludes certain municipal employees. Police floats were banned from the annual parade in January after Pride Toronto adopted a list of demands issued by the Toronto chapter of Black Lives Matter, which held a sit-in during last year’s parade. The group says it opposes police presence in the parade because it could discourage some people from taking part.
