Toronto Mayor John Tory didn’t hold back when reacting to the provincial budget released Thursday calling it a missed opportunity for help with transit and housing. Tory says the province has turned its back on the city with no new money for social housing and failure to match federal commitments for transit. Tory says without those matching dollars, transit projects will be stalled. “Without matching dollars from the province, the relief line cannot be built, waterfront transit will not be built, and the Elginton East LRT cannot be built,” Tory told the media. While he acknowledges the province is taking steps to cool Toronto’s housing market, he says the Liberals owe something to those who rely on social housing. The city had been looking for $860 million as past of the federal/provincial/municipal partnership for housing and transit. Premier Kathleen Wynn defended the budget and says the province is committed to affordable and social housing noting that $130 million from cap and trade revenues toward social housing. Saying it’s not too late, Tory will push the federal government to include matching stipulations in its transit and housing funds to compel the province to come to the table.
