A bear is definitely not something we expect to see roaming free in the City of Toronto, but one that was doing just that had to be shot and killed by police late Friday night.

A number of bear sightings had been reported in a northeastern neighbourhood of the city in the Middlefield and McCowan Road area.

Police say it was rummaging through backyards and actually banged on the door of one residence.

Animal control officials said they were not equipped to deal with such a dangerous situation, so police say they had no choice but to kill the animal.

No person or animal was injured by the bear. It was described as an adult black bear.

Police say they have no idea where it was from.
