Fans and fellow musicians are mourning the death of southern rock music legend Greg Allman.

Allman died Saturday at his home near Savannah, Georgia at the age of 69.  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member had been suffering from liver cancer and had recently stopped performing on tour.

His manager Michael Lehman says Allman was a brilliant pioneer in music, and a kind and gentle soul with the best laugh he ever heard.

Allman and his brother Duane formed The Allman Brothers Band almost five decades ago.  Duane Allman died in 1971 as the result of a motorcycle accident.

Allman was married to Cher from 1975 to 1979.   She Tweeted, “Words are impossible.”   Singer Melissa Ethridge said her southern rock heart is broken.
