A new study claims that banning junk food at schools is proving to be good for the health of students.

The study by University of New Brunswik researcher Philip Leonard found that students who were not able to buy unhealthy junk food at school for at least five years were two pounds lighter, on average, than students who were able to buy such items.

Leonard’s research studied 153-thousand students overall, including over 22-thousand who attended schools that banned junk food over the past 10 years.

Younger students had the best results, with the feeling that it could be because they would have fewer opportunities to leave the school property to buy junk food.

While the loss in weight may seem small, Leonard says it shows the banning of junk food in schools is the type of policy that’s playing a key role in the battle against chidhood obesity.

Junk food sales are banned at schools in six provinces, including Ontario.
