A Canadian man and his America wife believe they were targeted for kidnapping in Afghanistan because she was visibly pregnant.

Joshua Boyle claims their kidnappers, part of the Taliban-linked Haqqani network, hoped to obtain a ransom for the couple before his wife, Caitlin Coleman gave birth.

But after the birth of their children, he says, they mainly wanted to ransom him.

The couple were kidnapped in Afghanistan five years ago, and finally escaped their captors when they were moved into Pakistan. Pakistani soldiers received word of their whereabouts and rescued them.

A video released Saturday by the Pakistani military shows Boyle describing a firefight during the rescue in a “bullet riddled car.”

The couple and their children arrived in Toronto Friday night then moved on to reunite with Boyle’s family in Smith’s Falls near Ottawa.
