An 85-year-old Toronto woman, who is also a leading activist with the organization that won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, has compared her group’s uphill goals with her struggle to survive the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The group, The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, is a driving force behind an international treaty to ban nuclear weapons. Setsuko Thurlow, who was just 13 when the 1945 bombing devastated Hiroshima, spoke Sunday at the formal Nobel Peace prize presentation in Oslo, Norway. Thurlow said the blast left her buried under the rubble of a school, but she was able to see some light and crawl to safety. She cautioned that no human should experience what she went through. But she remains hopeful the her group and others can end the nuclear war era.
