PNEUMONIA LINKED TO ACCELERATED RISK OF DEMENTIA

Pneumonia claimed the life of hockey legend Johnny Bower. The infection kills 600 Ontarians every year and 75,000 cases are reported annually. Immunology researcher Dawn Bowdish of McMaster University recommends seniors get the flu shot, which reduces the risk of developing bacterial pneumonia which can sometimes develop after the flu. Bowdish says pneumonia is linked to accelerated rates of developing dementia and cardiovascular disease.
