It might not be too long before we stop seeing so many plastic straws.
Straws are a contributor to the world’s plastic pollution problem; so much so that a number of countries and cities are thinking of banning them along with plastic stirrers.
In an effort to reduce global plastic pollution, British Prime Minister Theresa May urged members at the recent Commonwealth Summit to ban plastic straws as well as plastic stir sticks and cotton swabs.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attended the conference, and while he didn’t suggest Canada was about to ban plastic straws, he did say our country endorses an international declaration that’s aimed at cleaning up the world’s oceans.
In the meantime, a campaign called “The Last Straw” has been launched by a Toronto waitress and a friend.
Jillian Lucas says the campaign is aimed at reducing the use of single-use plastics in restaurants and bars.
She says at participating restaurants, customers will only get a straw in their drink if they ask for one.
